ü      also used in story-telling and when we are telling people about past events.

B.  Spelling of regular verbs

1. Most regular verbs:   add '-ed'
    e.g.    work    >     worked
              help     >     helped
              stay     >     stayed

2. Verbs ending in '-e':   add '-d'
     e.g.    hope    >     hoped
               bake    >     baked

3. Verbs ending in consonant (not a, e, i, o, u) + y: change 'y' to 'i' and add '-ed'
     e.g.    cry       >     cried
               study   >     studied

4. Verbs ending in one stressed vowel + one consonant (except w or y):
double the consonant and add ‘-ed’
     e.g.    stop     >     stopped
               plan     >     planned
               ^re'fer    >     referred
(^This word has two syllables. The stress [重音] is on the second syllable.)

*If the stress is not on the second syllable, we do NOT double the consonant.
     e.g.    'visit     >     visited
               'open    >     opened

C. Irregular verbs
